International Albinism Awareness Day is a day set out to acknowledge the human rights of persons with albinism, a genetic condition caused due to the absence of melanin pigment in the hair, skin and eyes of the people affected, which causes vulnerability to sun exposure that can lead to skin cancer and severe visual impairment. Such disorder is inherited from both parents and occurs worldwide, regardless of ethnicity or gender.
This year’s theme: “Inclusion is Strength”, which builds on last year's theme of “United in making our voice heard”, aims to ensure the inclusion of the voices of persons with albinism in all sectors of life. It emphasises the importance of inclusion of a diversity of groups from both within and outside the albinism community.
An optometrist, Blessing Ibrahim said that albinism is the handiwork of God, emphasising that it is a gift from the Almighty God to compensate them for their seeming disability.
Another person living with albinism, Vivian, said they want to have a special care system for the albino population in Nigeria, as well as create equal opportunities for their members.
International Albinism Awareness Day serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing struggle faced by individuals with albinism worldwide.
